What is ELMO?
ELMO (ELectric MOdular) is a bespoke electric modular propulsion research UAV, under design and development as part of a University of Southampton 4th year Group Design Project (GDP). This project was established under the sponsorship of the Turner-Kirk UAV Research Support Programme.
As a part of Dr Ewan Kirk’s programme and a continuation GDP, we are researching the most efficient electric propulsion layout in support of the greater aim to better develop electric propulsion in aviation. This is in line with the Turner-Kirk programme’s aims, to develop technologies in support of the environment and conservation.
Project Aim
ELMO is designed for the purpose of identifying the most efficient electric engine configuration. It has the capability to be quickly assembled into a wealth of configurations; with four possible configurations for each inboard and outboard wing section, two for each wing tip and two propulsion units within the fuselage, nose and tail. This allows for a host of engine layouts to be tested.
